List of international cricket five-wicket hauls at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium

Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, or commonly known as the MRIC Stadium,[1] is a sports ground in Hambantota, Sri Lanka that has hosted international cricket matches. Named after Mahinda Rajapakse, former President of Sri Lanka, it was built for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, where Sri Lanka co-hosted with India and Bangladesh. The ground has a capacity of 25,000 spectators for international matches.[2] It has hosted limited over international cricket matches since its first ODI match in 2011 Cricket World Cup, the match between hosts Sri Lanka and Canada and has been home to 17 One Day International matches in total.[3] The MRIC Stadium has also staged 7 Twenty20 International (T20I) matches,[4] the first of which was in 2012 when the hosts Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 27 runs.[5]

In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer")[6] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[7]

The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI match at MRIC Stadium was Shahid Afridi for Pakistan against Kenya in 2011; Afirid finished with bowling figures of 5 wickets for 16 runs.[8]

The one and only Twenty20 International five-wicket haul in MRIC Stadium was taken by Sri Lanka's Ajantha Mendis against Zimbabwe in 2012. Mendis finished with bowling figures of 6 wickets for just 8 runs in the match. This figures still stands as the best bowling figures in a Twenty20 International match.[9]

As of December 2015, there had been only 3 five-wicket hauls recorded at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, 2 in ODIs and a single T20I five-wicket haul.[10]
