The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is the supreme governing authority of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and its 3 Divisions and 22 districts. It consists of an executive, led by the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, a judiciary and a legislative branch.
Like other states in India, the head of state of Jammu and Kashmir is the Governor, appointed by the President of India on the advice of the Central government. His or her post is largely ceremonial. The Chief Minister, [1] is the head of government. Nirmal Kumar Singh is the Deputy CM of Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar and Jammu are the summer and winter capitals of Jammu and Kashmir.
The present Legislature of Jammu and Kashmir is bicameral, consisting of a lower house (Vidhan Sabha) of 89 Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A) and an upper house (Vidhan Parishad) of 36 members. Its term is 6 years,[2] unless sooner dissolved. The assembly is housed in the "Old Secretariat" in Srinagar, the former Sher Garhi Palace. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has branches in Srinagar and Jammu.[3]
