The 2016–17 season is Nottingham Forest's 151st season in existence and 9th consecutive season in the Championship since promotion in 2007–08.[1] In addition to the Championship, the club will participate in the FA Cup and the newly rebranded EFL Cup. The season covers the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.

    1. Reid's contract expired on the 1 July 2016, but Nottingham Forest Football Club announced that they would enter discussions with Reid over a new contract. On 29 July, however, Reid announced his retirement from professional football before any agreement had been reached.[27]
    2. Although officially undisclosed, Burke's transfer fee was reported by the BBC to be £13,000,000. This represented both a record fee for a Scottish player and a club record sale for Nottingham Forest Football Club.[30]
