Mangela Kolis (मांगेला कोळी) is a subcaste among the Maharashtrian Koli community. They are found in most of the villages along the coast from north of Mumbai in Maharashtra. They speak Mangeli, a dialect of Marathi with a Gujarati influence.[1]

History and Origin

The etymology of the word Mangela comes from the words Mang, meaning fishing nets in the Marathi language and Ela meaning people. Literally, the word means a Fisherman, and the Mangela Koli are a community of Koli Fishermen.

Society Of Mangela is Very Mature Caste in Koli. Is the Sub-Caste Of Koli.Is Belongs From Western Region Of Maharashtra.

According to some traditions, the Mangela community originates from Thane's Palghar, Dahanu & Boisar Region, in South India and migrated from South India, and settled at western north coast of Maharashtra. They now speak Mixture of Marathi, Koli & Gujrati and those settled in Maharshtra also speak Gujarati.[1]

As per the book written by Kumar Suresh Singh on Daman and Diu Mangela are the original fish trading community of Daman. The term “Mangela” denotes “mang” means a fishing net and “ela” means working with. According to their legend, they trace their origin from the family of Satyawati or Matsya Gandha – the grandmother of pandavas. They relate themselves to Dhimars or Mallas. They belong to Kashyapa gotra. The basis of differentiation among the Kuls is social. Though they are aware of varna system, they cannot confirm their position in "Varna" order. They perceive their position as superior to all the communities even Bhraman as Bramhan eats with Mangela Communities.

The community has its concentration in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, Daman and Valsad district of Gujarat. In all, they are distributed 56 villages of Maharashtra, Daman and Gujarat. Mangeli is the spoken dialect within the community which is the mixture of Marathi, Koli & Gujarati.
