Barkestone-le-Vale is a village in the northeast of Leicestershire, England. The population is included in the civil parish of Redmile.

History

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul.

The village originated as a 7th-century settlement, and is mentioned as a parish in the 1086 Domesday Book.[1] It is now part of the parish that includes Redmile and Plungar.

Buildings

There are 120 dwellings in Barkestone-le-Vale. The village used to have a small primary school, which was closed in the late 1980s. At the time of its closure it had 11 pupils. The school building has been converted for residential use.[2] The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul dates back at least as far as 1639, when mention was made of its bells (now replaced). The church was restored in 1840.[1] There is a large farm house, which lay derelict for many years; this and its surrounding barns are currently being restored, for residential use. The former mill house has also been converted to residential use.[3]

Belvoir Castle is nearby.

Countryside

A number of footpaths lead to the village, one of them connecting it to Belvoir Castle.[4]

The rural nature of the area makes it suitable for bird-watching. Some species that may be observed in the countryside surrounding the village are buzzards, quail, and reed and sedge warblers.[5]
