The 2016–17 Sheffield Shield season is the 124th season of the Sheffield Shield, the domestic first-class cricket competition in Australia. It started on 25 October 2016 and is scheduled to finish on 29 March 2017.[1] There will be a break between December and January for the Big Bash League.[1] The first round of matches were played as day/night games in preparation for Australia's day/night Test match against Pakistan on 15 December 2016.[2] A second day/night round of fixtures will take place in round five of the tournament.[3][4]
