Vivian is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lyman County, South Dakota. The population was 119 at the 2010 census.

The community has the name of Vivian Hunter, the wife of a railroad official.[1]

Geography

Vivian is located at 43°55′35″N 100°17′33″W / 43.92639°N 100.29250°W / 43.92639; -100.29250 (43.926481, -100.292524).[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 131 people, 55 households, and 36 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 76.4 people per square mile (29.6/km²). There were 61 housing units at an average density of 35.6/sq mi (13.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 99.24% White and 0.76% Native American.

There were 55 households out of which 23.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 3.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 19.1% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 29.0% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 111.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $25,227, and the median income for a family was $26,477. Males had a median income of $26,111 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $13,503. There were 7.3% of families and 13.6% of the population living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 22.9% of those over 64.

World record hailstone

Vivian holds the world record for largest measured hailstone. On July 23, 2010, a hailstone measuring 8 inches in diameter, 18.62 inches in circumference, and 1.93 pounds in weight, fell during a severe storm that impacted the town.[4] This broke the previous record for largest hailstone held by Aurora, Nebraska since 2003.
