Stephanie Braganza is a Canadian singer-songwriter based in Toronto.[1] She has won a Toronto Independent Music Awards for Best Live Artist in 2012.[2][3] Her debut album Unexpected was released in 2010 which was produced by Canadian guitarist Colin Stewart.[4][5] In April 2016, she was nominated for a Marty Awards for Established Music Artist.[6] She plays piano, clarinet and tenor saxophone.[7]

Early life

Braganza was born in Kingston, Ontario and moved to Toronto in 2003. She started performing live on stage from age 12.[8] She graduated from Humber College, Toronto in a vocal arts program with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2008 and was featured in the cover story of Humber College's EtCetera publication.[9][10] At Humber she studied under the tutelage of Pat LaBarbera, Trish Colter and Juno Award winner Rik Emmett.[11]

Born of Goan descent, Stephanie is the eldest daughter of two to Edmund Braganza and Bella Miranda. Edmund was born in Mombasa, Kenya, and later lived in Nairobi. His parents came from Piedade, Ilhas, Goa and Colvale in Bardez, Goa. He later left Africa to study at Monte de Guirim in Goa, and then moved to Canada to pursue better opportunities. Bella was born in Kampala, Uganda, and her parents came from Marjorda and Vasco in Salcete, Goa. In 1972, she and her family had to flee Uganda, her country of birth, during the Asian Expulsion ordered by Idi Amin. Canada welcomed them as Uganda Refugees.[12]

Career

Stephanie is known for her vocals which draws from elements of pop, dance and RnB. Her first album Unexpected was released in 2010. She co-wrote the entire album with Canadian guitarist Colin Stewart, concentrating on creating the music with message.

She created the SIPO Foundation anthem Time To Shine, with rapper Wali “Flo” Shah. The world video premiere took place at the 2013 SIPO Conference at the Glenn Gould Studio (CBC) in Toronto.[13] Her first international single 2 Good 2 Be was released in 2013. The premiere of the single was hosted by V-Mix on Omni 2 TV. 2 Good 2 Be is featured in an international CD compilation Goa Chillout Zone-Vol.5.

In 2014, Stephanie released her second international single When We Last Kissed featuring Drega. The single was produced by her team and the music video was directed by Skye Sweetnam.[14] Earlier that year, she performed for former President George W. Bush in a private event at the Art Gallery of Ontario.[15][16]

She has been a featured performer at major events including Indie Music Week, South Asian Canadian Music Festival DesiFest and Toronto Veggie Pride Parade. She has performed at venues such as Casino Rama, Mod Club Theatre, The Canadian National Exhibition Center, Mississauga Celebration Square and Yonge-Dundas Square.[17] She also performed with rap artist Belly and Ginuwine at the Much Music Video Awards.[18]

Stephanie is involved with animal rights group Toronto Pig Save. From 2014, she has come out to their vigils and fundraisers and performed for them.[19][19]
