Salcette (Portuguese: Salcete, Konkani: साश्टी,Saxtti, Marathi: सासष्टी) is a taluka (a unit of administration) of South Goa district in the Indian state of Goa. Its administrative and economic headquarters is Margao. It is largely coterminous with a region called Sashti, which comprised, by local tradition, sixty-six villages, hence the name. However, Sashti also included the now separate taluka of Mormugao. There are nine comunidades in Salcette namely—Raia, Margao, Loutulim, Curtorim, Verna, Colva, Betalbatim, Nuvem, and Benaulim. Salcette is bounded by Mormugao taluk to the northwest, Ponda taluk to the northeast and east, Quepem taluk to the east and south, and the Arabian Sea to the west.

History

A copper-plate inscription issued by Kadamba king Viramarmadeva in A.D 1049 concerning a grant of a piece of land called Tudukapura,mentions Kudtarika agrahara of Chhat sathi desha.This inscription suggests that Chhat sathi refers to modern Salcete,known as Sashti or Sasashti in local languages.[1]
