Queenzieburn is a small settlement in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located near the town of Kilsyth and has a small industrial estate. It is home to the Scottish entertainer Janette Tough who, along with her husband Ian, make up the comedy duo The Krankies. The village has one school called Chapelgreen Primary. Senior pupils usually attend Kilsyth Academy.
Toponymy
Queenzieburn is pronounced /kwiːnibɜːrn/. This is due to the original Scots spelling, Queenȝieburn, containing the letter yogh, which was later erroneously confused with the tailed z.
Settlement & The Battle Of Kilsyth
The village is situated near the site of The Battle of Kilsyth, which took place in 1645. The battle was between Scottish forces led by the Marquis of Montrose and a Covenanter Army aligned with the English Parlament.
Prior to the battle, the Marquis of Montrose made camp in the area and his forces burned a huge effegy of the Queen of England to unsettle the approaching English Army. The Scottish forces won the battle and the burning of an effegy became a local tradition. This led to the area being dubbed Queenzieburn (Lowland Scots dialect: "Queenz ay burn" - The Queen Will Burn). The Burning Of The Queen Festival was eventually changed to incorporate Guy Fawkes Night celebrations and continued until the early 1900s. Festivities consisted of a parade, stalls & sporting activities, and culminating in the burning of the effegy.
The festival ceased during the onset of World War 1 and never resumed afterwards as a result of a renewed sense British pride across the country.
Future Development in the Area
In 2014, hotel group Hilton Worldwide expressed an interest in building a luxury spa hotel in the area. Residents petitioned North Lanarkshire Council to reject the proposed Queenzieburn Hilton Hotel, stating concerns regarding possible noise pollution during constrution, and the destruction of an area of green belt to make space for the complex. Discussions are still ongoing at present.
