History

motion was conceived by motion and graphic designers Elaine Montoya and Becky Padilla, who observed that many working professionals in the motion picture and broadcast industries experience creative burnout largely due to the demands and long hours common in the industry.[1][2] motion serves as a intimate "creative retreat" where professionals gather as a means to revitalize creativity.

motion was conceived by motion graphic designers Elaine Montoya and Becky Padilla, who observed that while there were numerous opportunities for working professionals in the motion picture and broadcast industries to further their technical skills, there were no venues where experienced creative professionals could come together as a community to address common issues and be inspired.

In the early year, (2006-2009), motion was held at various hotels in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From 2010-2013, motion was held at the historic KiMo Theatre in Albuquerque, New Mexico, commencing on the first Friday of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. In 2014, industry professionals cited difficulty in attending the conference because October is historically a busy time in the industry. Because of this, the dates for motion 2014 was changed to August.

Starting in 2015, motion will be held at the New Mexico History Museum Auditorium in Santa Fe, New Mexico from June 12–15 in conjunction with CURRENTS International New Media Festival. CURRENTS consists of video and interactive installations, animation, art apps, full dome and multimedia performances. motion producers cited the opportunity to provide attendees with unique creative stimuli as the primary reason for this collaboration. Over 5000 visitors attended CURRENTS festival events in 2014.

Initially, the speakers came from the fields of motion picture and broadcast, but by 2012, the roster of presenters broadened to include creatives outside of the motion picture and broadcast industries including writers, musicians, artists, and many others.

Some of the highlights of the conference include FACEOFF: The After Effects Challenge, where 3 motion design pros compete on stage in front of a live audience to create a 5-10 second motion graphic in just 60 minutes. Industry icons Trish and Chris Meyer along with motion emcee Elaine Montoya commentate the event. During FACEOFF industry related companies host booths, and provide training workshops.

motion speakers are some of the most creative thinkers and innovators today. A concept borrowed from TED, each speaker is on stage for 18 minutes sharing their unique perspective on subjects they’re passionate about. Innovative ideas that revitalize the creative muse. Talks that feed the creative brain. Past speakers include: Karin Fong, Director at Imaginary Forces, Andrew Orloff VFX Supervisor and Owner of Zoic Studios, HUD Designer Mark Coleran, Patrick Hanenberger, Production Designer at Dreamworks Animation, and Dan Haskett a veteran animator who designed the character Belle for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, as well as Ariel for The Little Mermaid and Tod as an adult for The Fox and the Hound.

Talks at motion focus creativity – with an emphasis on 'the art' of animation, motion design and vfx. Recent featured talks have included:

motion encompasses a unique creative culture across its wide spectrum of talks, providing an environment where audience members are encouraged to take an active role in the discussion. Participation in debate and reflection after each motion segment enhances the process, uniting speakers and audience members who wish to take the conversation to the next level.
