Maxim Healthcare Services is a privately held medical staffing company[1] headquartered in Columbia, Maryland.[2] Maxim Healthcare Services was founded in 1988 as MEDCALL Medical Staffing. President Brian Wynne opened the first office in Towson, Maryland, and the following year, Maxim began to expand, opening offices in Orlando, Florida; Springfield, New Jersey; and Silver Spring, Maryland. Maxim Healthcare contains the following subsidiaries: Maxim Healthcare Services,[3] Maxim Staffing Solutions,[4] Maxim Health Information Services, [5] Maxim Physician Resources,[6] TimeLine Recruiting,[7] TravelMax,[8] and Centrus Premier Homecare.[9]

Under the name MEDCALL, Maxim serviced the nursing home industry almost exclusively to start, but soon began to staff hospitals, clinics, schools, and assisted living facilities as well. In 1992, MEDCALL acquired NSI, a California homecare and staffing company. As MEDCALL continued to expand across the country, trademark issues led to a name change, and in spring 1993, the company became known as Maxim Healthcare Services.[10]

Maxim Healthcare Services has three primary service lines: Maxim Homecare, Maxim Health Systems and Maxim Staffing Solutions, which oversee 18 divisions. Maxim offers the following primary services: Homecare, Non-Medical Care, Medical Facility Staffing, Flu & Wellness & Autism and ABA Therapy Services.[11]

In 2008, Maxim Healthcare received ACHC Accreditation.[12]

Criminal and civil charges

Starting in 2009, Maxim and some of its employees came under government scrutiny for alleged fraudulent billings and false statements to health officials, which were “a common practice at Maxim from 2003 through 2009,” according to the U.S. Attorney's office in New Jersey.[13] Between 2009 and 2011, nine current and former Maxim employees including three senior managers pleaded guilty to felony charges.[13] In 2011, Maxim entered into agreements with the United States Department of Justice and affected states to pay $150 million to resolve criminal and civil charges that the company submitted claims for millions of dollars of work that it did not perform and operated offices that were not properly licensed.[14] The Company entered into a Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey, a Corporate Integrity Agreement with the Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and civil settlement agreements with the United States of America and 43 states.[15]

In September 2013, Maxim's Deferred Prosecution Agreement was lifted.
