Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness

Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellnesscaledan centre, located within the town of Caledon, Ontario. Built on the corner of Hwy 50 and Columbia way at 14111 Hwy 50, Bolton ON L7E 2V2 on the north hill of the town.[1] The centre was opened in the year 2002 and has been serving its community for over 10 years.[2]

The services offered at the centre include a fitness centre, outdoor skate-park, and a pool. The centre was designed to be a place people of all ages could enjoy from children to seniors. The centre was built in order to provide a safe place for the youth of Caledon, with the goal to be fully accessible for people with or without disabilities and special needs.[3] When building the centre staff asked parent of children with special needs what was needed in order to accommodate their children. The centre includes a snack bar, vending machines, and a Mr.Sub restaurant. The centre is open Monday to Sunday 5:45 am to 11 pm, closed on statutory holidays.

Fitness Centre

The fitness centre is held in 10,000 sq. foot field house, which is surrounded by a 3 lane track. The fitness centre includes, a fitness studio where fitness classes such as yoga, pilates and step classes are held. The cardio equipment includes treadmills, elliptical, bike and rowing machines. The cardio equipment covers half of the fitness centre floor space and the other half has strength training machines and free weights. In the middle of the gym spinning bikes are set up for spin class, which are held on a regular basis. The centre has 2 international squash courts, which can be signed out for use. The change rooms include lockers, showers, a whirlpool and a sauna. Personal training is available. People can sign up for yearly memberships or pay for the day.[4]

Youth Services

The recreational centre has a variety of actives that youth can participate in. They have the flipside mobile skate park, and the rock-climbing wall. The flipside skate park travels around the community in a large trailer and will set up ramps for youth to skateboard on.[5] They offer this service for youth who cannot easily access the community centre. They also travel with the rock-climbing wall and will set it up outside at different community functions, as well as an indoor rock-climbing wall located at the centre. The recreation centre expanded their facilities and added a 20,000 square foot gym where youth can participate in sporting activates such as basketball and indoor hockey. Youth dances are also held on a monthly basis for youth in the 7th and 8th grade, the dances are held for fundraising for Caledon youth services projects such as Ralphs Rink.[6] Every winter the Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness, build an outdoor ice rink that local youth can play hockey and ice skate on free of charge, the rink can be used for ball hockey in the warmer months. There is also an outdoor skate park open for youths in the neighbouring area.

Aquatics Centre

A 25-meter pool is located in the recreation centre. The pool runs 9 feet deep, consists of 3 lanes, is heated to 87 degrees and is shaped in an L.It includes an access ramp as well as a step beach entry. There is a viewing area which parents can watch their children. The centre offers swimming lessons year round in the pool for youth, the pool is also equip with family change rooms. Special attention is for children with special needs so the pool has a water lift so that every child can participate in water activates.There is a water curtain in the pool as well as jets, geysers and a water slide. Public, family and fitness swims are offered on a regular basis. The pool is included in the fitness membership or available for pay as you go.[7] Jesse’s sensory garden was donated by the parents of a child named Jesse, one of the first children to use to benefits of the recreation centre, students from local high school’s helped to create and plant the garden. The centre targets the sensory needs of children especially those with special needs factoring into the plants and flowers in the garden.[8]

Snoezelen Multi-Sensory Room

In 2005 the centre added a sensory room called Snoezelen muti-sensory room. The room is filled with colorfull objects, images, pleasant sounds and smells. This room was built specifically for children who have sensory or learning disabilities.[9]
