Before I Fall is an upcoming American drama film directed by Ry Russo-Young and written by Maria Maggenti. It is based on the 2010 novel of same name by Lauren Oliver. The film stars Zoey Deutch, Halston Sage, Logan Miller, Kian Lawley, Jennifer Beals, Diego Boneta, and Elena Kampouris. Principal photography took place in Squamish and Vancouver, from November 16 to December 19, 2015.

The film is scheduled to be released on March 3, 2017, by Open Road Films.

Plot

The novel begins when the protagonist, 17-year-old Samantha "Sam" Kingston, is killed in a car accident in her hometown of Ridgeview. She vividly describes her horrifying and painful death, and what flashes through her mind in those final seconds. However, she wakes up the following morning in bed, heart pounding and bathed in sweat, with the memory of her demise still fresh in her mind. Gradually, she realizes that for some reason, she is fated to relive the last day of her life, Friday, February 12, over and over, until she gets things right.

Throughout the week, Samantha, who seemingly had it all – popularity, an oft-desired boyfriend, and surface-level happiness – must examine what's really important in her "Mean Girls" life, in which she and her snobby, wealthy friends – Lindsay (the ringleader), Ally and Elody – made life miserable for underclassmen and social misfits, a life in which all that seems to matter is social status, clothes, boys, drinking and sex.

Through this "Groundhog Day" phenomenon, Sam experiences all five stages of grief. Denial is seen as she tries to evade her fate; she gets angry and rebels, lashing out at her friends (particularly Lindsay) and hanging out with students she would never dare be seen speaking with; she bargains with God, or fate, believing that if she can make things right, she can save her own life; depression, in which she feels that nothing even matters and where in she begins acting uncharacteristically recklessly; and finally, acceptance. The Sam who accepts her death – but only if she's able to save the life of her friends' prime target – is a very different character from the girl on the first page of the book.[1]

Cast

Production

On July 15, 2010, Fox 2000 Pictures bought the feature film's rights to the teen novel Before I Fall, a debut novel by Lauren Oliver published in 2010.[6][7] Maria Maggenti was hired to adapt the novel into a screenplay, while Jonathan Shestack would be producing and Ginny Pennekamp co-producing the film about a high school teenage girl student who thinks everyday as her last day until she gets everything in her life right.[6] In 2011, the script was listed among the Black List of best unproduced screenplays.[8] Ry Russo-Young was attached as film's director.[1] On September 15, 2015, it was announced that Zoey Deutch had been cast in the film for the lead role of Samantha Kingston, the teenage high school student.[1] Brian Robbins and Matthew Kaplan would produce the film through their Awesomeness Films, along with Shestack, with production to start in late October 2015.[1] On October 27, 2015, more cast was announced which included Halston Sage, Logan Miller, Kian Lawley, Diego Boneta, and Elena Kampouris.[2] Good Universe would handle the film's international sales at the American Film Market.[2] On November 3, 2015, Jennifer Beals joined the film's cast to play Samantha's mother.[3] On November 20, 2015, Liv Hewson was cast in the film to play Anna Cartullo.[4] Adam Taylor composed the film's score.[9]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on November 16, 2015 in Squamish, British Columbia, where they filmed at the Quest University.[7][10][11] Shooting also took place in and around Vancouver.[12] Filming ended on December 19, 2015.[13]

Release

In May 2016, Open Road Films acquired U.S distribution rights to the film.[14] The film was originally scheduled to be released on April 7, 2017, but was moved up to March 3.[15][16]
