List of future North American area codes

This is a list of future area codes in the North American Numbering Plan, which are intended to be used as needed for additional telephone numbers in various locations. Relief formats and dates are subject to change. All new area codes below will be in the "overlay" format.

Note: While not listed above as no new area codes will be added, the 213 area code and the surrounding 323 in the Los Angeles area (currently separate) will merge into an overlay, as the boundary will be erased on August 1, 2017.

*Indicates exhaust date of the existing area code(s) that will require relief.[1] Others with exhaust dates within 4 years (by the end of 2020) that currently do not have an approved relief plan and relief area code: 202, 209, 214/469/972, 215/267, 314, 405, 440, 480, 506, 510, 609, 610/484, 619, 707, 709, 805, 909, 916, 937.[2]
