The 2002-03 NBA season was the SuperSonics' 36th season in the NBA.^[1] During the offseason, the Sonics acquired Kenny Anderson from the Boston Celtics. The season is notable for trading Gary Payton and Desmond Mason at midseason to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Ray Allen. More changes continued as Anderson was traded to the New Orleans Hornets for Elden Campbell, who spent only half of the season with the Sonics. The Sonics, now led by newly acquired Allen, finished the year at 40–42, missing the playoffs. Following the season, Campbell signed as a free agent with the Detroit Pistons, where he won a championship. Payton also represented the Western Conference for the final time in the 2003 NBA All-Star Game.
