Yeppoon State High School

Yeppoon State High School is a secondary school located in Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia. As of 2006, it had around 950 students drawn from an area ranging from Byfield to the north, Zilzie to the south, and Mount Chalmers and Cawarral to the west. It is the only state high school on the Capricorn Coast, located a few kilometres from the centre of Yeppoon.

History

Yeppoon High opened in 1960. Yeppoon State High School is the only government-run secondary school on the Capricorn Coast.[1] A new Central Queensland Institute of TAFE campus is located adjacent to the school directly behind the agricultural farm.

The current principal of the school is Ian Boon who has been in the post since mid 2009. He is supported by deputy principals Mark Asher and Lesley Andrews, who have been part of the school community for many years.

Facilities

The school has a farm that has many animals including cows, horses and chickens. The farm also has fruit trees and areas for students to grow vegetables for their agricultural course assessments.

The school had a new arts centre built in 2008. The centre includes an art gallery in which student work is displayed. It also includes a new classroom, media editing room and a staff room.

Yeppoon High School has two ovals, one of which was recently refurbished with new grass and a sprinkler system. This sprinkler system uses recycled water. The oval was opened in August 2008 and named the Graham Page Oval in honour of a former member of the P&C Committee, who raised around A$1 for school programs and redevelopments, as well as writing grant applications and mentoring and tutoring students.

The school also has an outdoor basketball/tennis court, and a gymnasium that allows sports such as indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball and badminton to be taught and played. This facility is also used for school functions such as awards night, senior inductions, graduation ceremonies and QCS testing. It is also used for school assemblies and socials. The school also has a small gym facility that includes exercise bikes, weight benches and other equipment.

The school has a library that includes a computer lab and four classrooms. The school also has an outdoor courtyard area, a staffroom and tutor rooms. This facility is where the school's tutor program, where parents and community members volunteer to help students with schoolwork. The school also has five computer labs in which students are taught business, accounting, information technology and other classes.
