Yeduguri Sandinti Sharmila Reddy, known as Y. S. Sharmila, is the brand ambassador for the YSR Congress Party.

Public life

Y. S. Sharmila Reddy made headlines after she took up campaigning on behalf of the YSR Congress Party along with her mother Smt. Y.S. Vijaya Rajasekhara reddy in the absence of her brother from June 2012 in the united Andhra Pradesh state. The YSR Congress Party then won 15 of the 18 assembly seats for which the by-elections were held.[1]

Known to ride the coattails of her late father's fame, her and her brother have taken up the power vacuum. "Sharmila seems to have adopted the famous ‘angry young man’ stance of her late father and former Andhra CM, YSR. "The difference is that while YSR, whose life was claimed by a helicopter crash in September 2009, had used his sway with the masses in Sonia Gandhi’s favour back in 2004 and mid-2009, enabling the Congress to win 29 and 32 Lok Sabha seats in the state in those two general elections—the family’s current fight is against the grand old party," says Anil Budur Lulla in one of his articles.[2]

Walkathon milestones

Sharmila began her 3000 km walkathon amid milling crowds on Oct 18, 2012, when she confidently declared, “I am YSR’s daughter ; an arrow released by Jagan Anna. My name is Sharmila,” she said in Telugu as Sharmila imitated her father’s gesture by waving her left hand to the crowds.[3]

“She was the darling kid of the family,” Smt. Y.S. Bharathi Reddy, wife of YSR Congress Party chief Sri Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy once pointed out, “completely cocooned from politics. Everything was served to her on a silver platter.[4]”.
