Wil is a district of the canton of St.Gallen, Switzerland. It is named after the regional centre Wil, which is the largest city of the district. However, the district capital is Jonschwil.

Demographics

District Wil has a population of 74,543 (as of 31 December 2015).[1] Of the foreign population, (as of 2000), 947 are from Germany, 2,336 are from Italy, 6,127 are from ex-Yugoslavia, 439 are from Austria, 820 are from Turkey, and 2,029 are from another country.[2] As of 2000, 58,596 people speak German, 196 people speak French, 1,494 people speak Italian, and 81 people speak Romansh.[3]

The age distribution, as of 2000, in Region Wil is; 8,617 children or 13.0% of the population are between 0 and 9 years old and 9,137 teenagers or 13.8% are between 10 and 19. Of the adult population, 8,318 people or 12.5% of the population are between 20 and 29 years old. 10,883 people or 16.4% are between 30 and 39, 9,599 people or 14.5% are between 40 and 49, and 8,018 people or 12.1% are between 50 and 59. The senior population distribution is 5,433 people or 8.2% of the population are between 60 and 69 years old, 3,908 people or 5.9% are between 70 and 79, there are 2,102 people or 3.2% who are between 80 and 89,and there are 330 people or 0.5% who are between 90 and 99, and 5 people or 0.0% who are 100 or more.[3]

In 2000 there were 8,002 persons (or 12.1% of the population) who were living alone in a private dwelling. There were 14,333 (or 21.6%) persons who were part of a couple (married or otherwise committed) without children, and 37,617 (or 56.7%) who were part of a couple with children. There were 3,380 (or 5.1%) people who lived in single parent home, while there are 399 persons who were adult children living with one or both parents, 269 persons who lived in a household made up of relatives, 444 who lived household made up of unrelated persons,and 1,906 who are either institutionalized or live in another type of collective housing.[3]

Out of the total population in Region Wil, as of 2000, the highest education level completed by 13,989 people (21.1% of the population) was Primary, while 24,675 (37.2%) have completed Secondary, 7,191 (10.8%) have attended a Tertiary school, and 2,931 (4.4%) are not in school. The remainder did not answer this question.[3]

Economy

As of October 2009 the average unemployment rate was 4.1%.[4]

Religion

From the 2000 census, 34,670 or 52.3% are Roman Catholic, while 17,313 or 26.1% belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church. Of the rest of the population, there are 15 individuals (or about 0.02% of the population) who belong to the Christian Catholic faith, there are 1,946 individuals (or about 2.93% of the population) who belong to the Orthodox Church, and there are 1,617 individuals (or about 2.44% of the population) who belong to another Christian church. There are 17 individuals (or about 0.03% of the population) who are Jewish, and 4,195 (or about 6.32% of the population) who are Islamic. There are 460 individuals (or about 0.69% of the population) who belong to another church (not listed on the census), 4,050 (or about 6.10% of the population) belong to no church, are agnostic or atheist, and 2,067 individuals (or about 3.12% of the population) did not answer the question.[3]

Mergers and name changes

The municipality of Bronschhofen merged into Wil on 1 January 2013.[6]
