Wapakoneta High School

Wapakoneta High School (WHS), founded in 1904, is one of four schools that make up the Wapakoneta City School system. The school system includes two elementary buildings (grades K-4), one middle school (grades 5-7), and the high school (grades 8-12). The high school building, recently updated with a new fine arts wing and Performing Arts Center, is located on the north side of the city, convenient to the downtown of Wapakoneta as well as the larger city of Lima. WHS, home of the Redskins, hosts approximately 1160 students.

School Day Operations

WHS operates on a seven-mod day and is divided into two semester terms, and each semester includes two nineweek grading periods. The school year is a minimum of thirty-six weeks, or one hundred eighty school days.

Community

The population of Wapakoneta is approximately 9,900. The city is located at the crossroads of Interstate 75 and State Route 33 and hosts many small and large industries, diverse recreational facilities, and convenient shopping for its citizens. The downtown area of Wapakoneta has several small, unique businesses that allow residents as well as out-of-town guests both purchasing and eating entertainment. The Wapakoneta Waterpark provides hours of enjoyment each summer as does the YMCA and Veterans Park. In 2010, Wapakoneta was voted “Best Hometown” by Ohio Magazine. The town has also received national and world-wide fame as the home of the First Man on the Moon: Neil Armstrong. The Dance Centre in Wapakoneta helped prepare Kent Boyd for his success on “So You Think You Can Dance?” The Armstrong Air and Space Museum is host to many guests from around the world.

Curriculum

Students may choose a general program of studies or an academic program leading to college entrance. Students also have an opportunity to attend Apollo, a modern vocational school, offering a comprehensive curriculum of career programs. The high school currently offers advanced placement (AP) tests, on-site College Credit Plus classes, and off-site College Credit Plus classes offered at Rhodes State College or Wright State University Lake Campus. WHS students also have the opportunity of choosing from four languages: French, Spanish, German, and virtual school American Sign Language. In total, WHS offers 112 different classes on campus.

Class Ranking

The following formula is used to determine the top five students who earn the honor of speaking during graduation: 50% G.P.A., 25% advanced/AP/ classes, 15% ACT composite, and 10% total credits earned (Any course with a “P,” “S,” or “U” is not calculated in the G.P.A., for example: Physical Education, Retro, SILP, or Solo\Ensemble.) Graduation speaking privileges are determined after the seventh semester has been completed.

AP Classes

In 2015-2016, approximately one hundred and sixty AP tests were taken— approximately 67% of these tests earned a score of three or higher, which potentially (college expectations vary) yields college credit. *Importantly, we require that all Advanced Placement students take the AP test in May.

College Credit Plus

Students are welcome to take advantage of the College Credit Plus program as a local college or university. WHS also offers College Credit Plus classes on site via its staff. Classes offered (but not limited to) include English 11 and 12, Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Psychology, Economics, and History.

Staff Team

Fifty-three high-qualified teachers, one principal, one assistant principal, one athletic director, three guidance counselors, three secretaries, six para-educators, and various support staff, including an in-house virtual school coordinator, complete the WHS team. Go, Redskins!!!
