Vyacheslav Gennadievich Butusov (Russian: Вячеслав Геннадьевич Бутусов; born October 15, 1961 in Bugach, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union), is a Russian singer and songwriter. He was a lead singer of Nautilus Pompilius, a Russian rock group, until its disbandment, and from 2001 to today of U-Piter. He has since started his own career as a singer and writer.

Early life

Vyacheslav Butusov was born in Bugach Settlement, near Krasnoyarsk, in the Krasnoyarsk Region. Because of his father's profession, he lived and studied in different places of Siberia during his early life. In ninth grade they moved to Sverdlovsk (today Yekaterinburg), where he studied in Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute. He participated in the design of Sverdlovsk Metro.

Musical career

Nautilus Pompilius (1982-1997)

When a first-year student of Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute he got acquainted with musician Dmitry Umetsky. The two young men were keen on music and often gathered to play together. This resulted in recording of Nautilus Pompilius’s first and not quite successful album Pereyezd (Relocation) (1982–1983). In the same year Butusov met the poet Ilya Kormiltsev. Together with him Vyacheslav Butusov recorded his first mature album Nevidimka (An Invisible) in 1985. Next year their tandem released the record Razluka (Absence / Separation), which evoked terrific popularity of Nautilus Pompilius. The band’s last album Yablokitai was recorded by Butusov and Kormiltsev in 1996 in England with participation of Boris Grebenshikov and English musician Bill Nelson who became its producer.

Solo career (1997-Present)

After Nautilus Pompilius disbanded, Butusov launched his solo career. In 1997, he recorded Nezakonnopozhdenniy AlKhimik doktor faust pernatiy zmey with Yuri Kasparyan, and in 1998, his first solo album, Ovaly. During this years he also had a brief cameo in Russian crime film Brother, directed by Aleksei Balabanov. He also recorded some songs for the soundtrack of the film.

U-Piter (2001-Present)

In 2001 Vyacheslav Butusov founded the U-Piter band with former Kino guitarist, Yuri Kasparyan. As of 2016, they recorded 7 albums, the last being Gudgora (2015).

Writing

Besides his music career, in 2007 he launched a career as a writer, publishing a series of books.

Personal life

Butusov is married with Anzhelika Estoyeva (born 1970). He has four children: three daughters - Anna (born 1980; with his first wife Mariana Dobrovolskiy-Butusova), Ksenya (born 1991), Sofya (born 1999) and Daniil (born 2005).[1]
