Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center

Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) is a government-owned hospital in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines.

It began operation in 1911 as Hospital Del Sur and was soon legally established as Southern Islands Hospital. In 1992, it was renamed to honor Senator Vicente Sotto. As of 1998, it is authorized to have 800 beds.[1]

The hospital is the site of the Canister Scandal, in which surgeons secretly video-taped an operation removing a canister from a man's anus and posted it on YouTube. The patient filed a suit against them, which resulted in the 90-day suspension of two doctors and a nurse.[2] In February 2009, The Civil Service Commission declared that one of the nurses involved in the canister scandal was illegally suspended and compelled the said hospital to pay her back wages.[3]
