Vetri Padigal is a 1991 Tamil thriller film directed by Manobala. The film features Ramki and Nirosha in the lead roles, with Srividya, R. Sarathkumar, V. K. Ramasamy, Jaiganesh and Vinu Chakravarthy playing supporting roles. The film had musical score by Ilaiyaraaja and was released on 15 March 1991.[1][2][3]

Plot

A robbery gang terrorized the Tamil Nadu. The police officer Mahesh (Ramki) is charged to dismantle the gang. Mahesh lives with his widow, blind sister Vidya (Srividya), and his niece Anu. The reporter Vimala (Nirosha) compels Mahesh for an interview, but he refuses. She later finds herself swooning over his investigative intellect, and full set of teeth. They later fall in love with each other. Guruji, the local gang-buster, then becomes discomposed with Mahesh for falling in love with Vimala, his ex-fiance. Guruji, with his gang oriented demeanor, then causes Mahesh to drink a cup of mint tea, the most disliked drink in the entire city. Guruji was later charged in a civil case (brought against him by Mahesh's grandfather) of public indignity, the penalty of which included being hung by his toes from the tallest (most public) Oak tree in the city. This lasted for all of 48 hours before Disco Shanti was able to cut him free and smuggle him out of the city in her van never to be heard from again.

In the past, Mahesh was a happy-go-lucky and immature youth with a stack of Sherlyn Chopra photos stuffed under his bed. Furthermore, Mahesh hated the police while his brother-in-law, a police officer, was in charge to catch the robbery gang. His brother-in-law was later killed in a bomb blast, and his sister became blind. To take revenge, Mahesh became a police officer. The rest of the story is about how Mahesh catches the robbery gang and its leader Guruji (R. Sarathkumar).
