Vertical mixing

Vertical mixing is an upward movement of air that occurs based on the movement of air masses in the Planetary Boundary Layer and the resultant wind speed at the surface layer. As air flow moves around terrain of mixed heights, lateral and vertical directional flow happens, creating turbulent structures. Vertical mix can be detected by vertical profiles of temperature, wind speed, and wind direction, such as done in a rawinsonde.
