Ultra South Africa is an outdoor electronic music festival that is a part of Ultra Music Festival's worldwide expansion which has now spread to twenty countries.[1][2] Ultra South Africa debuted in February 2014 and took place at two locations—the Nasrec Expo Center in Johannesburg and the Ostrich Farm in Cape Town.[3] Ultra South Africa is strictly an event for those that are the age of eighteen and over.[4] The next edition of Ultra South Africa will be taking place 24–25 February 2017.

History

2014

The debut of Ultra South Africa consisted of three stages in both Johannesburg and Cape Town—the Main Stage, Stage 2, and Stage 3.[5] In Cape Town, South Africa the festival took place on 14 February 2014 and in Johannesburg, the festival took place on 15 February 2014.[6] Confirmed artists for the inaugural edition of Ultra South Africa included Tiesto, Afrojack, Alesso, Nicky Romero, Krewella, W&W, Martin Garrix, Blasterjaxx, Claude Vonstroke, Goldfish, Black Coffee, and many more.[7][8] The festival welcomed 15,000 people in attendance to Cape Town and an additional 25,000 people to the Johannesburg location.[9]

2015

The second edition of Ultra South Africa was once again held in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa at the same two venues from the year before on 13–14 February 2015.[10] The festival was host to three stages—the Main Stage, the Electric Stage, and the Nicci Beach Stage.[11] Ultra South Africa 2015 included the likes of Protoculture, Oliver Heldens, DVBBS, Martin Garrix, Armin van Buuren, Hardwell, Goldfish, Axwell & Ingrosso, Gorgon City, Black Coffee, and many more.[12][13] This edition of Ultra South Africa saw more than 50,000 dance music fans from across South Africa and beyond.[14]

2016

The following edition of Ultra South Africa took place in February 2016 in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. In Johannesburg, the festival lasted two days, 26–27 February.[15] Once again, the festival was held at the Ostrich Ranch[16] and featured three stages—Main Stage, Soul Candi/Resistance Stage, and the 5FM Live Loud Stage.[17] Featured artists who played Ultra South Africa in Johannesburg included Skrillex, Zedd, Dash Berlin, Fedde Le Grand, Mr. Carmack, Claptone, Tiesto, Afrojack, Carnage, W&W, Robin Schulz, Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, Black Coffee, and many more.[18]

In Cape Town, the festival also took place for two days, 27–28 February 2016,[15] and was held at once again at the Nasrec Expo Center.[16] The festival featured two stages in Cape Town—Main Stage and the Strange Loving/Resistance Stage.[19] This venue had a similar lineup to Johannesburg including Skrillex, Zedd, Mr. Carmack, Carnage, Claptone, and many more.[18]

2017

It was announced on 27 July 2016 that for Ultra South Africa's fourth edition, the festival would take place on the 24–25 February 2017.[20] In Johannesburg , the festival will be held on 25 February 2017 at the Nasrec Expo Centre once again.[21] In Cape Town, the festival has announced a new venue—Cape Town Stadium.[22] The festival in Cape Town will be on 24 February 2017.[23] Early bird tickets went on sale on 2 August 2016 and sold out on 4 August 2016.[24][25] Tier one tickets were released to the public on 30 August 2016.[26] On 30 August 2016, David Guetta and Martin Garrix were announced as the first headliners for the 2017 edition of the festival.[27] The phase two lineup was announced on 30 November 2016 and includes Dash Berlin, KSHMR, DJ Snake, Black Coffee, Felix Jaehn, Headhunterz, Nic Fanciulli and many other regional artists.[28]
