Tim Nelson (athlete)

Tim Nelson is an American distance runner, who earned All-American honors at the University of Wisconsin and qualified for the 2009 World Track and Field Championships for the U.S. team.

High School

Nelson hails from California where he attended Liberty Christian Academy and graduated in 2003. Tim Nelson won 3 California State CIF cross country championships:

[1] Over the course of his high school career he qualified for two Footlocker National Championship in 2001 and 2002. Tim Nelson (Liberty Christian) wins the 2002 State CIF 3200 title over defending champ, Kyle Alcorn (Buchanan).[2]

University of Wisconsin

Nelson went on to Wisconsin where he made an impact on the team immediately, placing high at the conference and regional level in his freshman year and qualifying for the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he placed 10th in the 10000 meters.[3] His junior year he was part of a national cross-country championship team in 2006 with an 18th-place finish at Nationals[4] in 30:06 in which he was the 6th man for the team. He also was an All-American (top 8 finisher) at the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2005, 2006, and 2007.[5] He was also the 2007 Big Ten Champion in the 5000 meters his senior year.[6]

Nike

Upon graduation, Tim Nelson ran professionally. He was sponsored by Nike,[6] and ran for Oregon TC Elite under the guidance of Jerry Schumacher until 2013. His major professional highlights have included qualifying for the 2009 World Track and Field Championships and defeating Bernard Lagat in 2010 at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships to take the 5000 meter title.
