Hayward and Washington had been with the Sparrows and tried harmonizing after the breakup by starting the Performers. .. How it occurred is not understood, but somehow the Performers got a recording contract with All-Star Records and recorded "I'll Make You Understand" in August 1956. This was led by Freddie with great bass work by Rocky. "Give Me Your Heart" was by Hayward. David Martin, formerly of the Sparrows and the Performers, performed fill-in duty with the Checkers."
