Tall Pines State Preserve

Tall Pines State Preserve is a 111-acre (45 ha) nature preserve in Gloucester County, New Jersey. The reserve opened in November 2015, and is Gloucester County's first state park. It is located on Bark Bridge Road in Deptford Township and the Sewell section of Mantua Township.[1]

The efforts of the South Jersey Land and Water Trust, the Friends of Tall Pines, Gloucester County Nature Club, and the New Jersey Green Acres Program were some of the groups that led to the preservation of this land.[1]

Overview

The South Jersey Land and Water Trust reports that the preserve is open to walking, birdwatching, running, cycling, and picnics. The land serves as a natural filter for the water supply of the area as well.[1]

History

Tall Pines State Preserve was once covered by forest, but in the early 1950s, the land was made into a golf course. In 1984, the golf course, which offered nighttime golfing, was sold, and became Maple Ridge Golf Course. The year of 2006 saw the land being sold to a development company. Thanks to the contributing groups, people were informed about the situation, and funds were raised to buy the land from the development company.[1]
