TEDxAuckland is an independent TEDx event held annually in Auckland, New Zealand. Like other TEDx events, the event obtained a free license from TED to hold the conference, with organizers agreeing to follow certain principles.[3] In May 2016, TEDxAuckland hosted 28 speakers at the Shed 10 venue on the waterfront in Auckland.[4]

History

TEDxAuckland was founded as an independent TEDx event by producer Elliott Blade.[2]

The fourth edition was held in August 2013, with speakers scheduled such as local cook Robert Oliver. Blade continued to organize, stating the previous event in 2012 had been sold out.[5] The August 2013 version featured performances by artists such as Samoan hip-hop artist King Kapisi, poet Grace Taylor, singer-songwriters Joseph and Maia, and the New Zealand String Quartet.[6]

In May 2016, TEDxAuckland hosted 28 speakers at the Shed 10 venue on the waterfront in Auckland.[4]

Overview

The x in TEDx refers to independently organized TED conference events, an initiative that started in 2008 to bring TED-like gatherings to smaller communities — like Auckland.[7] These events — 1,500 of them scheduled all over the world so far in 2015 — spark conversation and connection with the spirit of "ideas worth spreading".[8]

TEDx events are non-profit, but may use an admission fee or commercial sponsorship to cover costs.[9] Similarly, speakers are not paid. They must also relinquish the copyrights to their materials, which TED may edit and distribute under a Creative Commons license.
