Surrey County Council election, 1985, Guildford

In May 1985 county council elections were held in England, including those for Surrey County Council. Shown below are the results for the Guildford electoral districts on Surrey County Council.[1]

Two electoral divisions changed hands in these elections relative to 1981. The SDP-Liberal Alliance gained Guildford South from the Conservatives. The SDP-Liberal Alliance also held on to the electoral division of Worplesdon which it had gained from the Conservatives in a by-election in November 1984.

The Conservatives contested all nine electoral divisions, as they had done in 1981. Labour contested all nine electoral divisions, one more than they did in 1981. The SDP-Liberal Alliance also contested all nine seats, one more than the Liberals had contested in 1981. Two seats were contested by Ecology Party candidates.

The table below shows gains and losses relative to 1981.

  2. Listed in the 10 May 1985 Surrey Advertiser election results section as "Bill Bellerby". "Guildford Borough Council - A Compendium of Municipal Election results 1835 to 1974" by Roger Ottewill repeatedly lists his initials as "GR Bellerby" and that form is used herein.
  3. Seat gained by the SDP-Liberal Alliance in a by-election from the Conservatives in November 1984. Therefore described as an Alliance hold. However the percentage change shown are those relative to the May 1981 election, not the November 1984 by-election.
