St Cuthbert's Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Durham. It was opened on 31 May 1827 to replace two previous chapels, one run by the secular clergy and the other by the Jesuits.[3] Since 2012 the parish has been entrusted to the Dominican Order along with the Catholic Chaplaincy to Durham University.[4] The church is a protected building, being part of the Elvet Green Conservation Area.[5]

History

During the 18th century, Catholics were increasingly tolerated and local worship was permitted before the Catholic Emancipation Act. The Vicar Apostolic of the Northern District, Bishop William Gibson lived in the area and regularly celebrated Mass.[4]

In 1827, the church was built. It was designed by Ignatius Bonomi. In 1869, the tower was added to the church and in 1910 it was finally consecrated on 20 July.[4]

In September 2012, the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle entrusted the parish to the Dominican Order who would also provide Catholic chaplains to Durham University.[4] In 2013, a seven month £300,000 refurbishment program was initiated and was completed in February 2014.[5]

Parish

The church has two Sunday Masses every week, one at 10:00 on Sunday morning and one at 6:30pm during term time. From Monday to Saturday, there is one Mass every day.[6]
