Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering (SCTCE) or SCT College of Engineering is a state-government-sponsored engineering college[1] in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.

In 2006 Outlook magazine gave it a rank of 98 in its list of Top 100 Engineering Colleges of India, and it is one of the top 3 Engineering colleges in Kerala.[2] It is one of three engineering colleges from the state of Kerala to appear on the list. In 2011 WEEK survey, it was ranked 65th in the list of top 100 engineering colleges in India.

Administration

The governing body of the college is constituted by the government of Kerala is chaired by the Minister for Transport, government of Kerala, with Higher Education Secretary, Finance Secretary, Transport Secretary and Managing Director, KSRTC[3] (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) as ex officio members. Two other members (education experts) are nominated by the chairman.

Established under the University of Kerala in 1995, with AICTE approval, it is a college accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi, and ISO 9001:2000 Certification. SCTCE is one of the seven colleges in the state of Kerala aided under the World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).

Extensive links with research institutes and industries (VSSC, DRDO, ER&DCI, Technopark, Kerala, and IISc) has enabled SCT to maintain the vocational and practical relevance of its courses.

The college is at Pappanamcode 4 km from Trivandrum Central Railway Station and KSRTC central bus stand at Thampanoor. It is 15 km from Trivandrum International Airport.

There has been a governing body decision to start an undergraduate program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and graduate programs in six areas. The AICTE sanctioned M.Tech degree program in Machine Design by Mechanical Engineering Department started in 2009 with a single batch of students. AICTE also approved M.Tech degree program for Computer Science in 2010 with a single batch of students. AICTE has sanctioned M.Tech degree program in Signal Processing by Electronics and Communication Engineering Department in 2011 with a single batch of students. A new M.Tech course on Vehicle Design and Road safety will be started shortly after getting AICTE approval.

The TEQIP program of the government of India has brought changes in the quality of training offered by the college with the coming up of a Central Computing facility and digital library.tc.[6] The college conducts community development programs related to skill development and women empowerment.[7]

Admission

The admission procedure and fee structure of SCT College of Engineering is decided by the government of Kerala. The details are given in the admission prospectus published by Kerala State Entrance Commissioner[8] and can be found under Government self-financing colleges category. A percentage of seats are reserved for the dependents of KSRTC employees and a percentage of seats are reserved for the children of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). All admissions except under the NRI quota are based on the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala.

Faculty

Apart from experienced senior faculty, SCT College of Engineering has a large number of young faculty members who have received their education/training from India's premier institutes. Usually the recruitment is done by a selection test to the post of Assistant Professor. The test is conducted by a Kerala Government agency like LBS Centre for Science and Technology.

The college staff association, SCT College of Engineering Staff Association (SCTCESA), comprises all staff and faculty.

Industry-institute interaction

The college has an industry institute partnership cell which conducts training and education programs for the benefit of public and students. It helps the students take up the challenge of solving the problems faced by industry, by doing their final year projects with them. There is a Research and Consultancy wing.

Student life

Most of the students are day-scholars. The students from faraway places reside in college-approved hostels near the campus. Accommodation in the city is also used by the students.There are many cultural and technical festivals conducted by various clubs in the college.Of this the college fest Cult a Way is the most popular one. Also there are specials events like Demo Week, where the final year students dress up according to some themes .

The college has a number of student associations, with each branch having its own association. They organize seminars, contests and cultural events.

The college has a National Service Scheme unit, film club, and nature club, tech club, arts club.

The first college level road safety club in the state was formed at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram in association with the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department.

Cult a Way

Cult a Way is the annual technical and cultural festival of SCT. It was started in 2011 but took off rapidly and became one of the major college fests in kerala. It is a four- or five-day event held annually and almost all colleges in the state participate in this event.[9] The events includes technical workshops, cultural events like dance programs, treasure hunt, quizzes, fashion shows etc. Cult A Way.The proshows organised as part of Cult a Way attracts students as well as others in large numbers. The proshows mark the culmination of the 4 day festival which is a heartthrob among the younger generations of the state.

AutoBahn

AutoBahn is a 2 to 3 day long technical festival conducted by the students of SCTCE. The festival conducts Autoshows, Seminars and other events. Several Contests involving automobiles are also conducted bringing a large number of participants. The festival is conducted with the support of the Motor Vehicles Department of the Government of Kerala. The festival is normally conducted as a part of Cult A Way, the annual inter-college festival of Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering.In the 2013 edition of Autobahn India's top stunt riding team GhostRyderZ (GRz) was a huge success with an audience of over 5000 people and over 10000 tickets were sold in that year. In the following year the Stunt Show performance of Rafal Pasierbek ($tunter 13) the then World acclaimed stuntrider was attended by more than 6000 people .

Centre for Continuing Education

The Continuing Education Centre runs training programs for engineering college teachers. The centre conducts skill oriented training programs for the general public.

Flexibility in programs

The syllabus and academic guidelines issued by University of Kerala are followed. However, the college has a wide range of electives offered for its students, for example, e-commerce, Vehicle design, Aerospace Engineering, Aviation Electronics, Neural Network, Mechatronics, Fuzzy Logic, Image Processing and Optoelectronics. It is the second engineering college in Kerala to have a Mechatronics lab after the National Institute of Technology Calicut.
