"Somebody Else" is a song by American R&B singer-songwriter Mario, featuring guest vocals from rapper Nicki Minaj. The song was released in the United States as a digital download on May 21, 2013, on RCA Records. Originally intended to be the lead single from his upcoming fifth studio album, then-titled Evolve but was later scrapped.^[1] The record heavily samples the 1975 song "Remember the Rain", by American R&B group 21st Century.^[2]

Background

Through his official Twitter page, on May 17, 2013, he confirmed that he has been working with Polow Da Don, for the track "Somebody Else" featuring rapper Nicki Minaj.^[3]^[4] R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean recorded a demo of the song^[5] as did Chris Brown who considered the song for his album Fortune.^[6]

Music video

The video was filmed on May 25, 2013 and directed by Alexandre Moors.^[7] The video premiered on July 8, 2013 on MTV Jams and it was premiered on July 10, 2013 on BET's 106 & Park.^[8] The video chronicles the dramatic ending of a relationship as Mario and Nicki square off in the video.
