Sir John Marjoribanks, 1st Baronet

Sir John Marjoribanks, 1st Baronet (13 January 1763 – 5 February 1833) was a Scottish MP and twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh

Life

He was born on 13 January 1763, the eldest son of Edward Marjoribanks, of Hallyards and Lee, and Grizel, daughter of Archibald Stewart who was Lord Provost and MP for Edinburgh during the Jacobite rising of 1745, and then tried for high treason and acquitted. Sir John’s brother, Campbell Marjoribanks became Chairman of the East India Company; his brother, London merchant Stewart, became MP for Hythe; and his brother Edward a partner in the bank Coutts & Co.^[1]

Marjoribanks became MP for Bute and Caithness at the general election of 1812 and in 1814 served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh. He was created a Baronet by patent on 6 May 6, 1815. In 1818 he was elected to Parliament for Berwickshire, which he continued to represent during two Parliaments until the dissolution in 1826. He was Provost of Edinburgh for a second time in 1825.^[1]

He died at the Lees, Berwickshire, aged 70 on 5 February 1833.^[1]

Family

He married Allison, eldest daughter of William Ramsay, of Barnton, Midlothian on 15 April 1791; the couple had four sons and five daughters:

• Sir Edward Marjoribanks (1792-1833), who succeeded to the baronetcy.^[2][1]
• William, who became a captain in the East India Company navy and married Mary, eldest daughter of Henry Stone, a London banker.^[2][1]
• Charles (1794-1833), a civil servant of the East India Company in China, and later MP for Berwickshire. ^[2][1]
• Janet, who in 1816 married Robert Shuttleworth, of Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire, who died leaving an only daughter Janet his sole heiress; and secondly in 1816, to Frederick North, of Rougham, Norfolk.^[2][1]
• David (1797-1873), who became a merchant in London and later Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire.^[2][1]
• Rachael, who in 1823 married Josiah Nesbit of the Madras civil service.^[2][1]
• Agnes, who in 1818 married Sir Edward Poore, of Rusball, Wiltshire.^[2][1]
• Mary, who in 1826 married John Murray Nasmyth, only son of Sir James Nasmyth, 2nd Baronet, of Posso, Peebles.^[2][1]
• Susan,who in 1824 married Charles Craigie Halkett of the Halkett baronets.^[2][1]
