Shivaji Dutta is an Indian fashion designer based in Kolkata. He is the creative head of the label ‘Blank Spot’, which works primarily on sustainable design for apparel and accessories.

Early life and Education

Dutta had an interest in political science, art and philosophy while he was in school.[1] In 2004, he entered the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata, opting for the Textile Design Department. He graduated four years later, winning Best All Round Performance for the batch 2004-2008.[2]

Label

In 2009, Dutta launched his label, Blank Spot. He started working mostly with leather and textiles, making eco-friendly garments and bags.

The basic concept that Blank Spot revolves around is sustainability, making new garments from old, used apparel as well as other used and unused material.[3] He focuses on re-use rather than recycling, because the latter takes up a significant amount of energy.[4]

Shows

Dutta began his career in Indian fashion in 2011, showing his collection at Lakme Fashion Week (GenNext), for the Summer-Resort season.[5] He returned to Lakmé Fashion Week the following season, Winter-Festive 2011, this time as an Emerging Designer.[6] His third runway show was at Vancouver Fashion Week, Fall Winter 2013.[7][8]

In March 2014, Dutta showcased his collection, 'Change for Eternity' at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Russia for the season Autumn Winter 2014-15.[9]
