The sixth season of Shameless, an American comedy-drama television series based on the award-winning British series of the same name by Paul Abbott, premiered on January 10, 2016, concluded April 3, 2016.[1] Executive producers are John Wells, Andrew Stearn, Nancy M. Pimental, Davey Holmes, Christopher Chulack, Krista Vernoff and producers Terri Murphy and Princess Nash.[2]

Frank searches for answers from every religion he can think of, as to why his beloved was taken from him. Sean and Fiona are engaged in their philanderous relationship amidst changing tides at Patsy's. Mickey is now in prison, for Sammi's attempted murder, where he does Russian mafia hits for cash from Svetlana. Carl is released from jail, and his family is treated to his new street refined persona. Lip continues his complicated relationship with teacher, while finding new academic and career aim. Debbie lies to Fiona about not being pregnant, only for it to come back and bite her after her boyfriend, Derek, takes off. One error that occurred in the beginning of episode one: Fiona's character calls Ian "Lip" by accident. Was not corrected in the post edits. She says "Lip" time for work, don't forget to take your meds."

Life begins to spiral completely out of control for both Debbie and Fiona, as their respective worlds are shaken to the core. Carl fully embraces the life of a criminal. Ian becomes a casualty of Fiona's upending. After having been pushed to the breaking point, Kev takes neighborly matters into his own inept hands, leading to a serious consequence. Frank takes advantage of his own pain, while continuing his search for closure, that leads to a terrible outcome. Meanwhile, the Alibi enjoys the newfound benefits of its hip patronage.

Lip and Ian butt heads and fists, as they realize that they are both very different people now. Frank hosts new property guests. Kev and Fiona both get sent on emotional guilt trips. Kev's leads to almost getting his neighbors killed; while Fiona experiences a fiery reunion with her husband, Gus.

Patrick refuses to lend a helping hand to his extended family, sending the Gallagher home up for public auction. Fiona works to secure the needed funds, through slightly unscrupulous means. Kev's situation with his neighbor goes from bad to worse. The Alibi experiences financial woes, so V goes in search, with Svetlana, to find where their hipster patrons went. Ian makes a gay discovery at the local firehouse responsible for his rescue. Frank secures a future refuge and source of welfare for Debbie, her baby, and him, through quite unscrupulous means. Lip spends a perplexing weekend, away at a convention, with Helene. After mustering what they believe to be enough money, the Gallagher house is sold to the highest bidder; i.e. not a Gallagher.

Lip and Helene's sordid relationship comes to a screeching halt, after Amanda exacts some cold revenge. The Gallaghers are displaced from their abode, with each landing in different places. Frank provides an enjoyable distraction for Mrs. Wexler, while Debbie wheedles her way into Mr. Wexler's frame of mind. Sean's son comes for a visit. Feeling guilty for Yanis' violent passing, Kev hastily agrees to foster Asian child soldiers, much to V's chagrin. Ian attends a fireman/policeman fundraiser, expecting to score with crush, Caleb, but Caleb has a more substantial encounter in mind.

After discovering that Gus must supply his signature in order to get the Gallagher house back, Fiona sets up a meeting, that is all but cordial. Lip is heartbroken by the dismantling of his relationship with Helene. Ian and Caleb bond through harsh circumstances, as Ian turns over a new intimate leaf. Frank encourages Debbie to insure their current living condition, by way of a questionable hunch, after learning that Erika is on the mend. Carl and Nick's hoodlum life and friendship comes to a disturbing end. The Alibi undergoes another unforeseen hipster influx. Meanwhile, Sammi's mother, Queenie, whisks back into Frank and Chuckie's life; V connects with her new female refugee; and Fiona has her abortion.

Carl transitions the recently reclaimed Gallagher home into his "crib". Frank begins a deceitful mission to keep flame Queenie from leaving his life again. Lip continues to experience the ripple effects of his recent break-up. Caleb and Ian attend a family wedding, where they bond through learnt circumstances.

Lip experiences a sexual downturn, but is assisted by Queenie. Fiona sets out to grow closer to Sean's son, Will. After a startling encounter, Carl decides to turn away from the thug life, but he pays a hefty price. Ian and Caleb undergo further relationship bonding. Frank picks up where Carl left off.

Lip is bailed out of prison by Professor Youens, who urges him to seek AA treatment; Lip resists at first but finally goes after talking with Debbie and Kev, who help him realize he is turning into Frank. Debbie likewise realizes she needs to accept Fiona's help raising Frannie. Ian makes a successful case for getting his rig job back, while Carl tries and fails to befriend his girlfriend's cop father. Frank's attempt to put a hit on Sean fails, so he breaks into Sean's office. Before Fiona and Sean's wedding Frank arrives, and reveals to everyone that Sean is still using heroin; Sean finally admits to Fiona that he has been for months, then leaves to fight for custody of his son. At the end of the episode Ian, Debbie, Carl, Kev, Veronica, Svetlana and Caleb kidnap Frank and throw him in the freezing Chicago River.

Development and production

Shameless was renewed for a sixth season on January 12, 2015; which premiered on January 10, 2016.[15] The writers began working on the season on April 6, 2015.[16] Principal photography for the season began on August 5, 2015.[17]
