Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (popularly known as SJMSOM or simply SOM) is a public business school and part of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. SJMSOM was established in 1995.[1][2] In 2000, the school was renamed to Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, in honor of Dr. Shailesh J. Mehta.[3] The head of school is Prof S.Bhargava. Prof G.K. Adil, Prof Karuna Jain, Dr. Anand Patwardhan and Dr. Mangesh Korgaonkar (aka MGK) preceded Prof. Bhargava as the directors of the school.

SJMSOM conducts education and research in leadership, economics, marketing, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, technology management, operations, strategy and other areas. The school offers a full-time degree course (Master of Management), doctoral course and Management Development Programs(MDP)for company representatives. The school offers short-term programs in areas of management for the faculty of technical and management institutions during summer and winter seasons. These courses are usually sponsored by organizations such as AICTE, ISTE and DSIR.

The School offers consulting facilities to organizations, and faculty and students participate in these projects. These organizations have included ICICI, The World Bank, Indian Oil Corporation, Indian Tube Manufacturers Pvt Ltd, Geologistics India Ltd, Tata Auto Plastics, Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd, Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies, ICRA, .

Master of Management program

The School flagship program is the Master of Management (M.Mgmt) degree, a two-year course. seeks to develop managers for an integrated understanding of all business functions.

Activities range from Asia’s biggest cultural festival Mood Indigo, India’s second-biggest festival on technology Techfest to IIT’s General Championship.

There are a number of clubs to pursue interests; these include a wildlife club, a swim club, a trekking club and many more. Academic clubs for each stream of management are established.

Avenues is the annual international business school festival of IIT Bombay. .[4]

Clubs

Prominent clubs are Marktrix (Marketing), Opera (Operations), Systematics (IT/Systems), Finesse (Finance), Humane (HR), Eclub (Entrepreneurship) and Consig (Consulting). These cater to marketing, operations, systems, finance, HR, Entrepreneurship and consulting buffs respectively.

SPIKE is a recently started Sports Club of the School. SPIKE strives to advance the dauntless spirit of sportsmanship and competition among students. Through the course of the academic year, they organize various Inter-B School Tournaments, SOM League and Open events. The hard work, dedication and commitment shown throughout the year culminates into hosting B-School sports fest “PRITHVI“.

Continuum

Continuum is the rolling seminar series at the school that covers recent management trends and brings together personalities of the corporate and academic world. They are held in five fields: Systems, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and Operations.[5]

L!VE

L!VE is the school's e-magazine that was started in January 2006 with the theme 'Management Redefined'. "It was initially an IT and systematics magazine", but it has gone on to encompass all aspects of management and its disciplines.[6]

Industry linkages

The school enjoys the support of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (Government of India), ICICI, Hindustan Lever Ltd, Hindi Vidya Bhavan and Larsen & Toubro Limited. Hindustan Lever Limited and Hindi Vidya Bhavan provides a number of scholarships to students for excellence in academics every year. Apart from this there are a few merit-based scholarships from the Shailesh J Mehta Endowment Fund.

The school interacts with departments and agencies of the government of India like the Planning Commission, Department of Electronics, Department of Science and Technology, CII and the Ministry of Environment & Forests.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed with Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India for collaboration in the field of Technology Management.
