P. S. Nivas, born in Kozhikode, Kerala, India, is an Indian cinematographer, film director, and film producer who has worked in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema.

Early life and education

He graduated from the St. Joseph's College, Devagiri, Kozhikode and passed Diploma in Film Technology From Institute of film Technology, Adayar, Madras. He was awarded the National Film Awards for Best Cinematographer for the Malayalam movie Mohiniyattam in the year 1977. He has won Kerala Film Fans Association award-1977 for the best cinematographer for the same movie in the year 1977. The Andhra Pradesh State government award Nandi award for the year 1979 for the best cinematographer was awarded to Nivas for the Telugu movie Nimajjanam.

Nivas started his film career as an operative camera man in P. N. Menon’s Malayalam movies - Kuttyedathi (1971), Mappusakshi (1972), Chembarathi (1972) and director Babu Nanthankode's Swapnam (1973), in which Ashok Kumar was the cinematographer. His first film as an independent camera man was Sathyathinte Nizhalil for which Babu Nanthankode was the director. Sudheer,the hero of the movie Sathyathinte Nizhalil, received the Best Actor Award of the Kerala State Government in 1975.

Nivas got opportunity to enter the Tamil movie industry during the year 1977. His first movie was 16 Vayathinile for which Bharathiraja was the director. Pathinaru Vayathinile broke convention to create a new genre of village cinema. If there is one influential movie in the modern history of Tamil Cinema, it is Pathinaru Vayathinile. A move that was the Director Bharathi rajaa's own words. After working with Bharathiraajas hit movies Kizhake Pogum Rail and Sigappu Rojakkal, worked for Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu (Tamil: இளமை ஊஞ்சல் ஆடுகிறது; English: Youth is swinging) is a Tamil film directed by C.V.Sridhar. It became a big hit. Then he worked for the movie Salangai oli. Salangai Oli(Tamil: சலங்கை ஒலி) was a box office hit movie directed by K. Viswanath and produced by Edida Nageshwara Rao, starring Kamal Haasan and Jayaprada in lead rolesit .The film is a cult classic over the years, doing great business in all the Southern languages. Nivas got an opportunity to enter the Telugu cinema industry in 1978. His first movie was Vayasu Pilichindi, which was directed by C.V. Sreedhar. This was a remake of the Tamil hit movie Illamai Oonjaladukirathu. The second movie Nimajjanam, directed by B. S. Narayana, produced by Pattabhi Ramireddy, was an award movie. The actress Sharadha got National award for the best actress in the year 1979. The national award for the best feature film in Telugu was also for Nimajjanam. The third movie Punadhirallu or Punadi Rallu (Telugu: పునాదిరాళ్ళు), the first film acted by Telugu film star Chiranjeevi, is a 1979 Telugu film directed by Rajkumar. A cinematography was done for the movie Sagara Sangamam (Telugu: సాగర సంగమం), a 1983 Telugu film directed by K. Viswanath and produced by Edida Nageshwara Rao, starring Kamal Haasan, Jayaprada. For that movie, Ilaiyaraaja won National Film Award for Best Music Direction and S. P. Balasubramaniam won award for the Best Male Playback Singer. Other awards for this movie were Filmfare Award for Best Actor - Telugu - Kamal Haasan, Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Telugu - Jayaparada and Filmfare Award for Best Director - Telugu - K. Viswanath. The next movie Sankeerthana was a love story with music and dialogs. The director Geetha Krishna penned the story. With actors like Nagarjuna, Girish Karnnad, J.V. Somayajulu the performance is well maintained.
