Self-marriage
Self-marriage is marriage by a person to themselves.[1][2] It is known as a commitment that values self-love, and self-compassion . Supporters of the practice argue that it leads to a happier life. [3] The idea of such a ceremony is also described in the book Quirkyalone: a manifesto for uncompromising romantics by Sasha Cagen. It can also refer to a self-uniting marriage, that is a marriage without an officiant.[4] Self-marriage is not the usual norm of union between individuals but a number of people have put it into practice, particularly women.
Ceremony rituals
Some Self-marrying programs include giving guidance, practice, and support prior to the marriage. [5] Ceremonies take almost exactly the same form as that of a regular marriage. They can include guests, cake, and a reception. Also, the person can have a private moment in a room where they can express self-love with a mirror and a candle.
In popular culture
Cerca Travel reported by BBC and other media outlets have designed unique packages for the single brides that include the gown, hairstyle, limousine service, a hotel stay, and a photo album.[6]
Photographer Grace Gelder's Self Marriage was picked up by multiple media outlets in 2014 following an article in The Guardian newspaper.
In Chris Morris's television series Jam a middle-aged man marries himself.[7]
In Glee Sue Sylvester not only marries herself to herself, but also officiates the ceremony because she has determined that she is the perfect partner for herself. Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and The City marries herself. [8]
In Doctor Who episode The Time Of Angels, it is mentioned that The Church was against self-marrying when The Doctor was talking about the two-headed Aplans.
