Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan is thought to be part of Budreal sub tribe of the Dhund Abbasis. Sardar Mehtab's term was cut short by the military coup of 12 October 1999 and he was arrested from his house in Abbottabad.[2] The first ever case against Pervez Musharraf was filed by his lawyer Mr. Mian Muhibullah Kakakhel Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan in the case of Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan Versus National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and other high Military hierarchy. The petition was numbered as writ petition No. 1 of 2000.

Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan Abbasi (Urdu/Pashto/Hindko: سردار مهتاب احمد خان عباسي) is a Pakistani politician from Abbottabad, who also served as Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan from 2014 to 2016,Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from 1997 to 1999, and Federal Minister for Railways in 2008.^[3] He is politically affiliated with Pakistan Muslim League (N). He has served as a senator for five years since March 2003, until he won the NA-17 Abbottabad-I seat for the National Assembly of Pakistan in the 2008 general election.

As Chief Minister (1997–1999)

Mehtab Ahmed Khan became the 16th Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 21 February 1997, taking over from Raja Sikander Zaman, and served until 12 October 1999.^[4]

During his tenure as Chief Minister, Mehtab Ahmed Khan approved the Chief Minister Development Plan prepared by Prof Subhan Qureshi, which was later updated to Dairy Science Park through two international workshops held at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, in 2011 and 2013, respectively.^[5][6][7] The Park has given birth to Peshawar Meat Company,^[8][9] which is to be implemented jointly by the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, the Department of Local Government and Rural Development, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Board of Investment and Trade.^[10][11]

Post-CM political career

Mehtab Ahmed Khan could not contest the general elections in 2002 for National Assembly, and therefore had to settle as a Senator in the March 2003 – March 2008 tenure.

As Senator (2003–2008)

Sardar Mehtab was amongst the few politicians who remained in Pakistan and were an integral part of the party during the exile of Nawaz Sharif. He was elected to the Senate of Pakistan in 2003 holding this office until the 2008 general election.

Member of National Assembly (2008-2013)

In the 2008 general elections, Mehtab Ahmed Khan won NA-17 Abbottabad seat He also won the PF-45 provincial assembly seat, and hence had to vacate both the Senate seat and the provincial assembly seat after the victory, as a parliamentarian can only keep one seat. His son Shamoon yar Khan won this seat . He was elected as the Federal Minister for Railways on the 31st of March 2008 in the initial coalition between the PPP and PML(N) after the elections. However he along with the other PML(N) ministers resigned less than two months later after differences regarding the disagreement of freedom to judiciary {http://www.app.com.pk/en_/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38079} In the 2013 general elections, Mehtab Ahmad Khan lost to his political rival for the seat of national assembly.

Post 2013 Elections

Sardar Mehtab was elected as the Opposition Leader in the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the 3rd of June 2013 and he retained the position until the 9th of April 2014 when he resigned to take oath as the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The President of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain, on the advice of the Prime Minister, Nawaz sharif appointed him as governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, province of Pakistan.He took oath of the office of the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 15 April 2014 in Peshawar.^[1] On 8 February 2016, he resigned as Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.^[12]
