Barangay Salindeg is one of the 39 barangays of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. It is known for their big, juicy Singkamas (Pachyrhizus erosus) that farmers grow and sell them to commercial and public markets.

History

During the early Spanish period, Salindeg was still accessible by water as there was a big river near the place.

One day while the Spanish Civil Guards were patrolling they came upon a woman who was catching shrimps, crabs and shells (called leddeg in the dialect) in the shallow portion of the river. It was the first time the woman saw white men and she was scared especially when they asked a question which she did not understand. As she was extremely nervous she just uttered things which are translated as follows: "Sali is my name sir, and these are leddeg". "Leddeg is a kind of shell which is abundant in bodies of water that are not very salty. "Salin-en-eg, senorita, eh!", the Civil Guards quoted.

Since then the Spaniards called the place Salindeg, however some Ilocano old men say that "Salindeg" also means orderliness arising from a peaceful situation. (in Iloko the words "Pia ken salindeg" are sometimes mentioned in speeches when the audience is composed of mature Ilocanos and when the speaker is referring to a situation that is peaceful, orderly and tranquil)

Weather and Climate

Salindeg is one of the barangays of Vigan.

The city of Vigan falls under the first climate type in the Philippines which is characterized by two pronounced seasons—the dry season which starts from the month of November and ends in April; and the wet season which spans the months of May to October. The average annual rainfall is 190.683 mm. and the heaviest registered rainfall is 693. 3 mm.

The average temperature is 26 °C. The average warmest temperature is 30.9 °C and the average coldest temperature is 21.1 °C. An average of 7-10 typhoons visit Vigan annually. The average relative humidity is 81%.

Sitios

Politically, Salindeg is divided into Four Sitios, or Barrios.

There is a plan of creating another sitio and the name will be Sitio Laud. In they will take a portion of sitio Ammianan, Bagatan, and Centro.

Economy

Salindeg is a peaceful barangay. The main occupations of the people are potmaking and farming. A minority of the populations job are fishing. A small portion of the population are government employees and businessmen.

There are also some souvenir vendors and Sari- Sari Store vendors.

• Baluarte - a zoo located in Salindeg where visitors can see a variety of animals (including tigers and ostriches). It is also a popular venue for special events such as seminars and conferences. The owner of Baluarte is former Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson.

La Virgen de los Remedios.

Predominantly, Roman Catholic is practiced here as a result of Spanish influence. One Chapel is built there that can be found at Sitio Centro. and La Virgen de los Remedios as their Patron Saint.
