Sailing in Dublin Club

The 'Sailing in Dublin Club' (SID) is a voluntary run yacht and dinghy club based in Dún Laoghaire harbour, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown , County Dublin, Ireland. The club was founded in 1984 to promote sailing by providing shared ownership of boats.

Club owned boats

Classes sailed include Sigma 33, Ruffian 23 and Laser Vago. The club cruising yacht is a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 35.

Developing sailing skills

Though not a sailing school, members improve sailing skills through time spent on the water. All sailing sessions are on club owned dinghies and yacht. The club organises day sail in Dublin Bay, participation in local regattas and race series and national and international cruises for members. Members are encouraged to take approved sailing qualifications and often organise group discounts with course providers.

How the club operates

The club is run by a committee made up of the Commodore/Chairperson, Treasurer, Safety Officer, Keelboat Secretary, Dinghy Secretary, Training Officer, Promotions Officer and other roles. An annual general meeting is held in the spring of every year. Sailings are organised via e-mail and an on-line booking document. Each sailing session has a club nominated captain/ skipper and a vice-skipper and at least 2 crew members. The skipper has responsibility for the boat and crew during the sail. For dinghy sails, a safety boat is also used. Members book onto a sail via on-line booking document. If the sail is full, there is a reserve list system. Members' telephone numbers and e-mail addresses are shared amongst members.

Club membership

An annual club membership runs from January to December. The club accepts novice sailors as well as experienced sailors. The membership fee covers membership of Sailing in Dublin Club, usage of club equipment and membership of the Irish Sailing Association (ISA).

Non-members may join the club for a day, known as a guest sail, to meet members, sail and find out more about the club.
