He became a member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) on 1 June 2015 but remained a Independent Member of the House of Representatives because of procedures that prohibits party switching during a incumbent legislative session. On 20 March 2014, van Vliet announced that he left the PVV due to Geert Wilders' statement that there should be fewer Moroccans in the Netherlands. Van Vliet will stay in the parliament as an independent.[1][2]
