Founded in 1986, Q Division was originally located at 443 Albany Street in Boston, but moved to its current two-studio facility in 2000. Bands that have recorded at Q Division include Pixies, who recorded their second album Surfer Rosa at the studio.

Recording Engineers who have worked at Q Division include Steve Albini, Kris Smith, Shane O'Connor, and Paul Kolderie.

The name may be a reference to an obscure Monty Python skit about the "Piranha Brothers" in which one of the policemen investigating was Superintendent Harry 'Snapper' Organs of Q Division.
