Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus

Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus was a Roman statesman who served as consul in AD 9 and as Governor of Moesia from 12 to 35.

Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus was elected to the consulship, with Quintus Sulpicius Camerinus, in the year 9. The Lex Papia Poppaea was passed during his consulship. The law meant to strengthen and encourage marriage.[1]

From 15 until his death in 35, Sabinus served as Governor of Moesia.[2] He enjoyed the friendship of the Emperors Augustus and Tiberius.[3]

During the reign of Tiberius, Sabinus ended a revolt in Thrace in 26.[4] Consequently, he was awarded a honorary triumph.[5]

Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus died in late December of 35. He is believed to have died of natural causes. He is the father of Poppaea Sabina the Elder and maternal grandfather of Poppaea Sabina the Younger.[6][7]
