"Molytva za Ukrainu" (Ukrainian: Молитва за Україну, or "Prayer for Ukraine") is the main nominee for the spiritual anthem of Ukraine. There are several versions of the lyrics written by Oleksandr Konysky, although the main idea and rhyme does not change. Mykola Lysenko, a great Ukrainian composer, created music to accompany the text.

History

On July 14, 1998 with the initiative of the Cabinet of minister of Ukraine this church hymn was part of the law project registered under #1229 "About the text of the State Anthem of Ukraine and the Spiritual Anthem of Ukraine. The author of the project was Anatoliy Holubchenko, the native of Mariupol and former vice-premier minister of Ukraine (1997-1999).[1] On December 24, 1999 the project was withdrawn.

Lyrics

UkrainianRoman transliterationWord-for-word translationLiterary translation by Dmytro Shostak[2]

Bozhe velykyi, yedynyi,
Nam Ukrainu khrany,
Voli i svitu prominniam,
Ty yii osiny.

Svitlom nauky i znannia
Nas, ditey, prosvity,
V chystii liubovi do kraiu,
Ty nas, Bozhe, zrosty.

Molymos', Bozhe yedynyi,
Nam Ukrainu khrany,
Vsi svoi lasky y shchedroty,
Ty na liud nash zverny.

Dai yomu voliu, dai yomu doliu,
Dai dobroho svitu, shchastia,
Dai, Bozhe, narodu
I mnohaia, mnohaia lita.

Oh God, Almighty and Only
for us our Ukraine, please, keep
with rays of freedom and light
may You set her in light.

With the light of science and knowledge
keep us, Your children, enlightened.
In pure love to the land
May You, oh Lord, bring us up.

We pray, oh Lord and the Only,
for us our Ukraine, please, keep.
All of your grace and generosity,
May you turn to our people.

Give it freedom, give it good fate,
give it good world, happiness,
give, oh Lord, the people
And many, many years.

Lord, oh the Great and Almighty,
Protect our beloved Ukraine,
Bless her with freedom and light
Of your holy rays.

With learning and knowledge enlighten
Us, your children small,
In love pure and everlasting
Let us, oh Lord, grow.

We pray, oh Lord Almighty,
Protect our beloved Ukraine,
Grant our people and country
All your kindness and grace.

Bless us with freedom, bless us with wisdom,
Guide into kind world,
Bless us, oh Lord, with good fortune
For ever and evermore.
