Postal is an ongoing American comic book series created by Matt Hawkins, Bryan Hill, and Issac Goodhart. It has been published through Top Cow Productions since February 2015. A television adaptation is in development for Hulu.

The story is about Eden, Wyoming, a fictional town where ex-convicts secretly live together in peace. Residents must abide by the mayor's strict rules, and any crime is severely punished. The lead character, Mark, is the mayor's son, lives with Asperger syndrome, is the town mail carrier, and is the only non-convict in Eden.

Publication history

The concept behind Postal was created by Hawkins, who is also the president of Top Cow Productions. He drew inspiration from Northern Exposure, Twin Peaks, and True Detective.[1] Hawkins partnered with Hill to write the story. To ensure he wrote the lead character's Aspergers authentically without being offensive, Hill researched the condition and spoke with people who have dealt with it.[2] The two writers chose to work with Goodhart, who had won Top Cow's annual talent hunt contest in 2014, because of his artistic style.[3] Hill describes Postal as "a Norman Rockwell painting, if there was blood in it."[4]

The series was formally announced November 10, 2014, and was planned as a four-issue limited series.[5][3] The first issue was released in February 2015. That month, it sold an estimated 14,000 physical copies, selling out at the distributor level.[6][7] Subsequent issues continued to sell out, prompting the series to switch to an ongoing monthly series.[3] Digital copies of the first issue were made available for free as part of the In-Store Convention Kick-off event held in March 2016, then again in September 2016 when the television adaptation for Hulu was announced.[8][9] Beginning with #12, Hill began writing the book alone, although Hawkins still has input on the story and dialogue.[10]

In the fall of 2016, Postal was part of a three-issue crossover limited series with two other comic titles created by Hawkins, The Tithe and Think Tank. It was co-written by Hawkins and Hill with art by Atilo Rojo, who Hawkins previously collaborated with on IXth Generation[4]

Critical reception

According to review aggregator Comic Book Roundup, the first issue of the series received an average score of 7.4/10 based on 18 reviews.[11] The series as a whole averages 8.2/10, based on 71 reviews.[12]

Adaptation

A live action television adaptation of Postal from Matt Tolmach Productions and Legendary TV was in development in early 2016.[13][14] The Walking Dead executive producer Seth Hoffman is writing the pilot script.[13] It was picked up by Hulu in September 2016.[15]
