Poonoor is a small but developed village in Unnikulam Panchayath of Kozhikode District,in the state of Kerala, India. Situated on Thamarassery-Koyilandy state highway 4.5 km west to Thamarassery town and 8.5 km east to Balussery town. Poonoor is in Koyilandy Taluk. Poonoor is on the banks of the " Poonoor River", Now poonoor is developing speedily.State highway sh 35 is passing through poonoor.

Demography

The people of Poonoor area is well educated and better employed. In comparison to other similar villages of the district, government employed citizens are of abundance in Poonoor. There are number of villagers employed to key posts in Government and private sector. The huge number of teachers working in other districts and the number of retired government employees will give a clear picture of education level of Poonoor. Though there are many people seeking jobs abroad, especially in Gulf countries;they are well employed. The one and only government high school in Unnikulam Grama Panchayath is known in the name of Poonoor. The future of Poonoor will be still brighter looking to the hundreds of students seeking higher education in various sectors.

Educational Organizations

There is a government school here with classes up to twelfth. There is an Old Sunni Madhrassa (Sunanul Hudha) here. Markaz Garden and Madheenathunnor are prominent Madhrassas. There is one MBA college called Beryl School of Management. Medical education is given by PHRC Academy. Gadha Public School is also in this locality.

Economy

Poonoor town is in the peak of its growth from last seven years. The small but dense Poonoor town showed a spontaneous growth to the west till Peringalam Vayal and east up to Cheeni Mukku. Madathum Poyil road became the rush area being "room for all things", and with the relocation of GMUP School, a fast growth is expected towards south. The reconstruction of Pazhaya Palam (The old bridge) accelerated the business growth along Pazhaya Palam Road. The business in Poonoor is transferred from the hands of few rich people to the common "Poonoorians" (Citizens of Poonoor) recently by liberal and open minded approach and policy of old business magnets of town. During 2008-2010 a lot of ready made textiles, hardware, home appliances, vegetable and other shops are opened to add to the existing list of trade houses. Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi(VVES), organisation of traders and merchants; of Poonoor is a strong body having key role in social movements of Poonoor. The recent national strike (September 2010) has not affected Poonoor as all the merchants decided not to participate in the strike to avoid difficulties to public.

Sunday Markets

Poonoor Town is a commercial center of all neighboring villages. The rich access of transportation and distance to other small villages spot Poonoor for all commercial deals. Sunday Market (Chandha) of Poonoor is famous for all sort of small trades, auctions and exhibitions. Small traders and merchants from various part of the district exhibit their goods and commercials from early in the morning. People from neighboring places heads to Poonoor Sunday Market with a hope of purchasing essential things of good quality for a better price in ease. Though the market is shifted to the newly built arcades nobody will forget the colourful scene of old Sunday market all along the street sides of Poonoor town.

Communal Harmony

The population of poonoor area is equally contains Muslims and Hindus. Christians are rarely in Poonoor area. The harmonious people of Poonoor never have a story of communal evils. "Thiyya community is the majority in Hindus and second will be other backward communities. The bulk of Muslims are of the traditional Sunnis and the rest is the followers of Mujahid movements. Poonoor "Vadha prathivadham (Face to Face Debate) of 19 between traditional Sunnis and Salafis is an important turn in the history of Kerala Muslims.
