Petrie Ice Rises

Petrie Ice Rises (70°33′S 72°12′W / 70.550°S 72.200°W / -70.550; -72.200Coordinates: 70°33′S 72°12′W / 70.550°S 72.200°W / -70.550; -72.200) is a group of ice rises extending in a north-south line lying merged within the Wilkins Ice Shelf, to the west of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Seen from the air on a British Antarctic Survey (BAS) radio echo sounding flight around Alexander Island, February 11, 1967, and later accurately positioned from U.S. Landsat imagery. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1980 after David L. Petrie, BAS and Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) electronic technician, about 1966-70, who was on the flight.
