Panchobh is a village of the Darbhanga District, state of Bihar, India. It is in the Mithila Region and is one of the largest villages based on its area and population. Brahmin (Maithil) dominate the village population, and several other castes live in nearby villages. The main town of "Laheriasarai" is located eight kilometers to the east, the administrative headquarters of Darbhanga district. Panchobh is located on the bank of the river Nima, part of "Adhwara Samuh". This village is one of the well developed villages of the Darbhanga district. Panchobh as an "Adarsh gram".

Floods occur here in July and August, and cause damage. The main commerce of the village is agriculture. There are many serviceman in the village. Around 20-30 people of the village are employed at the Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga. There is much migration from the village to: the US and Canada.

Literacy is very high. There is a high school, middle school, and Prathmik School in the village. Panchobh has many advantages being located so near Darbhanga: education, product markets and shops and transportation. The Darbhanga/Laheriasarai corridor is the main business hub of the area. Darbhanga is very attractive as a market for people from the surrounding. Near Laheriasarai tower, people of Panchobh can be found. Panchobh has a strong presence in Darbhanga and Laheriasarai.

Panchobh is very near to Laheriasarai town. For Panchobh people have come to Hazma Chowk, at Hazma Chowk there are so many Rickshaw, Tempo or Tanga available for a trip to Panchobh. You can catch any one as per your convenience. Usually the Auto charge for the trip is around Rs.100. It will take 25 minutes to 35 minutes from Hazma Chowk to reach to Panchobh.

Panchobh is located beside the State Highway 50 (SH 50). This highway goes to Samastipur. And Panchobh is located alongside the National Highway 57 (NH 57) near Simri. This highway goes to Porbandar (Gujarat) and Guwahati (Assam).

Start from Hazma Chowk -> Hazma Chowk -> Said Nagar -> Cross bridge over Bagmati river -> Ekmi Ghat -> Ojhaul village -> sahpur village->Taralahi village -> From Taralahi -> Take right turn from State highway 50 (remember to take right turn from taralahi) -> Travel straight -> Lakhansair Pan bagan -> Kelwagachi -> Kamalpur -> Harichanda -> PANCHOBH.

Name origins of Panchobh

The name of the village comes from the ancestor Late Sri Panchu Baba. Sri Panchu baba established the village when he came many years ago. There is a Brahma Shthan in the village to honor him.

Society arrangement in Panchobh

Most people in the village of Panchobh are of the Brahmin caste (Maithil Brahmin), one of the few places where there is such a large population from that caste in the district. They are gentle and known for their hospitality.

Panchobh panchayat has residents of other castes: Rajput, Yadav, Dhanuk, Badhay (carpenter), Khatvay, Muslim, Nai, Dhobi, Kumhar and others. In Mahnauli, Rajputs are in the majority. In Harichanda there is a mixed population from several castes.

In Panchobh the entire village is arranged on basis of GHARAYANA. Mainly there are four GHRAYANA here in Panchobh. Namely Sarkari gharayana, Choudhary gharayana, Ravana gharayana and Khakharii gharayana. All are BRAHMINS here. Among all gharayana Sarkari Gharayana is the largest one.

Language and culture

The Maithili is the spoken language of the village. Panchobh is known for its Maithil Brahmins.

Panchobh has many basic amenities. It has a BSNL Telephone Exchange. Panchobh is very well known for its development. There are four mobile phone towers in the village. It has a high school, a middle school, a primary school, a Saraswati Sishu Mandir.

Dev Narayan High School (D N High School) was established in the village in 1957, and is near the Rajwan of Dihrampur Village. It is one of the best schools in the Darbhanga Dustrict. The name of the school is from the late D N Ojha (Birla). He was a successful business-man in the custom clearing department at Kirdirpur Dock (Kolkata) during 1960&1985. A large number of student of this school have been successful in many occupations in the nation and abroad.

There is one government hospital and a post office in the village. Sri Raghavendra Choudhary is the postmaster. Literacy is very high in Panchobh; about 6 people from this village have graduated from IIT. D. N. Chaudhary of this village was one of the 11 scientists in the Apollo series of NASA.

Sri Rajiv Kumar Choudhary is the mukhiya of Panchobh. Previously he was involved in student politics. During his tenure Panchobh got a significant development in all area like Infrastructures, Roads, Electricity and Others. Still his impact in Panchobh village is very effective. However, Late Sri Narsingh Choudhary was the longest serving mukhiya of Panchobh.

Mr. Ramesh Kumar Choudhary was the first Panchayat Samiti Sadasya of Panchobh. He has done many things to serve the peoples. He even went to Jail in 2003 due to Flood Protest.

Festivals celebrated in Panchobh

1.Maa Durga Pooja: Shree Krishnakant Jha a very devoted Karyakarta (member) of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has started Durga Pooja festival in Panchobh around 25 years back to unite the Hindu samaj (society). Durga Pooja celebrated here in most marvelous manner. As Durga pooja is 10 days festival so peoples of Panchobh enjoy here a lot. Peoples from all adjacent villages comes to see this pooja here in Panchobh.

2.Maa Saraswati Pooja: Saraswati Pooja festival is being celebrated in Panchobh in all tolas separately since last 25 years. Like Durga Pooja, Saraswati Pooja also is a great festival for Panchobh. Among all puja committee AADARSH PUJA SAMITI- PAKKA POKHARI is the oldest one (since 1990).

3.Chhath: Chhath pooja is one of the holiest festivals for Biharis. The way of celebrating Chhath in the village Panchobh is almost same to celebrating Chhath in through the Bihar. Many Peoples from all around the country who lives far, usuually come to Panchobh during Chath. There is lot of songs dedicated to the Chhath festival. Chath celebrated at Pakka Pokhar, Purni Pokhair, Harichanda Pokhair and Chapki pokhair.

4.Tila Sankaraint: It comes every year on 14 or 15 January. On the eve of this festival people of the village take holy bath in the pond in the winter morning. After that they ignite fire to warms their body. Children enjoy taking special breakfast during warming his body. The morning breakfast on the day of Makarsankrati include sweets made by parched rice, flattened rice, tilkut, sugarcane, dahi (curd), etc. The women perform puja in home and distributes prasaad among children & other members of family. Khichri is very important dish on this day.

4.Holi: On the eve of the festival people enjoy with different colour and gulal. The way of playing Holi in the village is somewhat different from its neighbouring area. Villagers first play Holi only with colour during 8A.M to 1P.M. After that they play only gulal till evening 8 p.m. Villagers handsack with each other and takes blessings from the elders during gulal spray.

5.Joor Sital :The festival always falls on April 14 just after Amavasaya of Chaitra month and marks the beginning of the new year. The Amavasaya of Chaitra month is the last day of Hindu year and on the next day begins the new year according to Hindu calendar. The festival is known as with various name in different parts of India. Vaisakhi in North India. Vishu in Kerala. People of mithila region know this festival as Joor Sital. Villagers of the Mithila region celebrates the festival in different way. On the day of the Joor Sital every elder guys get up early morning in each family. They give bless to every younger one. The way of blessing is that they take water (Jal) in bended palm (Htheli) and put their palm on the head of younger one at least three or five times continuously. People performs puja at home and mango garden. They offer Baasi (cooked food in night) Vari and Rice to god. Every child and young guys pour water on the dryland. They irrigate almost all plants, tree in their own garden.
